How To … Optical Scan Voting
Introduction

Welcome to this introduction to the ES&S Model 100 Optical Scan Voting System. Voting on the Model 100 is easy as 1,2,3!

Receive Ballot
After you register, a poll worker will hand you a paper ballot. You may also be given a secrecy folder. The secrecy folder will protect your selections from view, and allow you to cast your ballot in complete privacy.

STEP 1:

Mark Selections
As a first step in the voting process, you will mark your selections on the paper ballot. Mark your preferred selections for every contest by filling in the oval next to a name or issue.

It is important to mark your ballot properly.

Be sure to use the marking device provided.

Also be sure to fill-in the oval completely, and stay within the line. Do not mark you selection with an “X” or any othr notation. And, again, completely fill in the oval.

Finally, be sure to select no more than the number of choices allowed in any given contest.

STEP 2a:

Write-In

To write-in a candidate, simply fill-in the circle next to “write-in” and — on the line – spell the name of the individual for whom you would like to vote.

Again, it is important to mark your ballot properly. If you have any questions, please ask a poll worker for instruction.

STEP 2b:

Review Selections

After you have considered every race or issue on the ballot, carefully review your selections. If you would like to change a selection, or if you have made an incorrect mark, please ask a poll worker for a new ballot.

STEP 3:

Cast Ballot

After you are satisfied with all of your selections, return your ballot to the secrecy folder if one has been provided – and take it to the Model 100 Optical Scan Ballot Counter. There, you will insert your ballot into the feeder. Unless you are notified otherwise, your ballot has been cast.

A prompt will appear on the screen if you have selected more than the number of choices allowed in a given contest. If you would like to change your selections, hit the “return” button and ask a poll worker for a new ballot. Otherwise, hit the “accept” button to override the notification. Your ballot will be cast.

As always, if you have any questions or need assistance, please contact a poll worker.
